wow I should have gotten this done a long time ago but never got around to it- but hey its finished!
this is my headcanon theory that connects the Rise of the Guardians movie with the Guardians of Childhood books.
The movie and the books are actually in fact, separate universes more or less. SO Although I love both theories of the possible separate prequel storylines, as someone  who is also a fan of the books I like to mash both books and the movie together. So here is my theory on how to do so:

At some point, Nightlight has a big fight with the nightmare king. They both infect eachother's hearts. Because they stabbed eachother at the same time, neither is sucked into a comma, they're both deflected and damaged. Nightlight's light effectively destroys all outside fearlings, and most that resided within Pitch's heart. Pitch is now more human. He is less cruel, and although he does not have a clear conscience from his dark past, he feels the human longing for family and emotion that Kozmotis had. So thus, we get movie Pitch.
Nightlight on the other hand, because I'd like to have a couple hundred years to separate Jack's age with when Pitch became more human again... its nicer to have a stretched time period so the guardians have time to adjust to the idea that Pitch is less of the dark demon he was, so they don't expect as much from him because of the "dark ages"...
perhaps Nightlight is stuck in space for a few years, or he crash lands to the planet and resides within his diamond dagger... whatever the case, at some point down the line, Nightlight falls to Earth, and with the most convenient timing, little Jackson Overland was outside looking up at the stars. Nightlight sees into his heart and realizes Jack's potential, he sees how good of a soul he has. Nightlight fuses his soul with Jack's, residing...hiding... surviving, and sleeping inside Jack for years. Because he's so weak, and after Jack's death, Nightlight is stuck in slumber... a coma state. He can't help Jack unless something jolts him awake.
The two potential things that would do that:
1. Pitch somehow is able to possess Jack with nightmare sand, which awakens Nightlight, and because of his protective light in Jack's soul, he cannot be taken over by darkness no matter how hard Pitch may try.
2. Jack somehow sees through Man in the Moon's memories from the tooth in the ruby box, seeing Nightlight, and potentially reawakening him.

And perhaps the reason MIM was quiet to Jack for so many years was because he did not want to awake Nightlight too soon, because it could excessively weaken Nightlight more, not to mention have Jack go into an existential crisis with confusing colliding memories from two to three different lifetimes?

anyway, that's more or less my AU in which the books connect with the movie.
Otherwise I like separate universes for the two of them as well. Makes it less confusing.
