The theory I believe ->
There are 3 time zones.
1. Fredbear's Family Diner
2. Freddy Fazbear's Pizza (1987)
3. Freddy Fazbear's Pizza (renewal)
First Time Zone.
old Fredbear's Family Diner.
Children were murdered at this restaurant. How do we know?
in old Freddy's mini game, the room is small, with 6 angry children who want to be fed their cake. One child is standing outside. The "Purple Man" (the murderer) killed the one child that couldn't get in. Same goes for Foxy. He runs out to find 5 children dead. These murders cannot have happened during the second game because the old animatronics are supposed to be ONLY USED FOR SPARE PARTS. THEY'RE NOT ENTERTAINING FOR THE KIDS AT THIS TIME.
This means the marionette must have been with the 4 original animatronics in the first restaurant, taking those 5 dead children and stuffing them into suits. (or rather their souls into the suits)
It can be believed that the child who was first murdered outside the restaurant could have possessed the Marionette.
Second Time Zone.
The Murderer takes on a job at the new restaurant, and uses the golden freddy suit in back to tamper with the criminal data base recognition of the toy animatronics. So they mistake all adults as evil eventually, and start to attack you, the night watcher, in the game as well.
Although it may appear that the 5 children were murdered in the first time zone, the mini game where you play as Freddy and wander around the new restaurant with the toy animatronics; following the marionette, you find 5 dead children hiding in certain places throughout the restaurant. Does that mean more than 5 children were killed? There is a hide-and-seek theory, as to the children tried to run and hide from the murderer, and he later found them and killed them in their places.
It is questionable that on night 7; the custom night of the second game, you are a different person: Fritz Smith. Since it is a custom night, you tamper with the animatronics. Later, you are fired for doing so. it is questionable if you are just another random employee, or if you are actually the purple guy, and the 7th night is actually a prequel night before Jeremy works his 6 night shifts.Which justifies the criminal data base tampering.
We just do not have enough evidence or clarity to figure out exactly how many murders there were, how many murderERS there were, and what times these all happened. Its not clear exactly what happened when the golden freddy suit was used. "Someone used one of the suits... we had a spare one, a yellow one in the back, someone used it.. now none of them are acting right." its unclear if there were dead bodies found, or if something else had happened. Considering there was one last even scheduled the day after, having Jeremy take on the day shift, that would be the bite of '87.
Because the older animatronics are probably on watch or locked in the back room, I bet my money that Mangle killed an adult. Animatronics do not harm children; only adults. The Mangle usually goes to bite your frontal lobe when it attacks you from the ceiling; and considering how sharp those teeth were and all the wires and skeletal parts hanging out of it, it can do some major damage. Some people think the one who was bit was Jeremy, the night guard, which would make sense because they've seen you practically every night now, and see you as the most common enemy. You are supposed to be guarding the people to make sure the animatronics don't harm anyone in the first place; which makes it very likely Jeremy was the one to get his brain gnawed at.
Leading to the closure of this restaurant.
Third Time Zone.
You are now Mike possibly a few years later. (Maybe 20 to 30 years) The 4 animatronics are hunting any lone adults in the vicinity at night. You survive until the night the night where the phone guy investigates the old animatronic spare parts in the back room, and he probably realizes they are coming for him. So his phone call to you, telling you to check out the animatronics in the back when you get a chance, is basically a final message note, telling you to come find his body when the day comes around. it is strange that in both the first and the second game, phone guy seems awfully nervous when he talks to you, and he seems to know a lot about the animatronics before hand which makes him suspicious, but because of his curiosity and death in the first game, I believe it is just not possible for him to be the murderer. I especially find it very strange how even after 20 to 30 years later, the phone guy still works with the Freddy Fazbear business. After everything that happened, you'd think he'd quit his job from all the traumatizing experiences. Especially strange how he seems to know about all the animatronics first hand before anyone else.... how did he get this experience? I highly doubt he'd be the killer..... Especially since he dies in the end.
Golden Freddy appears to be a hallucination, which could explain the 5th child's imprinted ghost within the old suit.
However, it is strange that both Jeremy AND Mike would hallucinate the Golden Freddy; since they are in two different time "zones". Golden Freddy kills you somehow, and says "Its me" when it gets you.
Which brings up the thought... if you were to take that literally, "its me" would mean "its you". Which would make YOU, the player, the murderer in the game. Which would make sense as to why you are hallucinating the golden freddy suit, haunted by the past killings you did. But it would just not make sense, since you are Jeremy and Mike in two different games. You would think "its me" would mean the murderer is still visiting the restaurant in the suit, however, the suit is hunched over, and disappears within a blink, so it is possessed possibly by the 5th child, or by the marionette's soul.

As for Five Nights at Freddy's 3, I hope we get a glimpse as to what the old Fredbear's Family Diner used to look like more specifically.
The phone guy said they tried contacting the original owners prier to the investigation happening, but they are hard to find apparently, which brings up a few questions. Wad the Diner haunted before by the first child?
Where did the marionette come into play? What became of the purple murderer?
It would be interesting if the 3rd game had a scenario where you travel through all 3 different restaurant areas go back to the 1st game and you run into the bathroom, look in the mirror, you are golden freddy’s head, you take it off, disgusting purple creepy face with black veils trailing down the eyes, and you scream and the mirror with a smile on your face and the marionette kills you or something interesting, where you actually finally get to play and see through the murderer's eyes.
